Alyssa Dixon
she,her (Akimel O’odham)
Alyssa Dixon is a proud Akimel O’odham mother from the Gila River Indian Community. She has four children, two boys and two girls. In 2017, she founded Alyssa's Kosin, focusing on reconnecting her community through ancestral foods.
Alyssa’s Kosin offers catering services and workshops, including a Je'e (mother) talk workshop to support mothers in her community with day-to-day tasks and reintroduce traditional womb and postpartum care teachings. Growing up, Alyssa learned many teachings from family and friends in the kitchen, a safe place where stories and ancestral knowledge were shared to help navigate life.
Alyssa is a strong advocate for postpartum care, having experienced postpartum depression after the traumatic birth of her second son during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. She sought treatment and remembered teachings from community elders, family, and friends. Alyssa began integrating them into her daily routine to heal from within. With help, she understood that the concept of the "Village" could evolve, and that was okay.
After finding a community that embraced her traditional teachings, Alyssa joined the Cihuapactli Collective Dual Training Program in mid-2022. As of December 2022, she is a Sacred Community Birth Workers board member.
